Friday 13th Haunted Houses

Studley Park House Camden NSW

It’s Friday 13th. To get your spook on we are looking at some famous haunted houses. Studley Park House in Camden, was originally built by grazier William Payne in 1889. Although considered haunted, it is a beautiful building, featuring many admirable decorative mouldings. The death of two children has earned the house its haunted reputation. The residence became a boarding college and in 1909 a 14-year-old student, Ray Blackstone, drowned in a dam near the residence. His body is believed to have been kept at the cellar until it was buried. The building was sold soon after and reverted back to a residence. The son of acclaimed business man Arthur Adolphus Gregory died at the house in 1939 from appendicitis and his body was kept in the theatrette.

Spooky disturbances at the house include a hangman’s noose found dangling from a steeple roof by builders renovating in 2010, unexplained lights, sightings of a lady who stands at the window and a photograph of a ghostly young boy in the basement taken by ghost hunters.

Closer to home in Bundoora, on the outskirts of Melbourne, is the old Larundel Mental Asylum, famous in its day for incarcerating a great number of Melburnians suffering mental illness. Closed in 2001, it has been an abandoned building, off limits to the public but has built a reputation for being haunted. This attractive building was one of Melbourne’s three “magnificent asylums for the insane” built in the 1930s and 40s.

Now covered in graffiti the building, since its closure, has been a hangout for ghost hunters, graffiti artists and squatters. There have been reports of loud banging, children’s laughter, crying, and an eerie music box. Serial killer Peter Dupas was treated here, adding to the mystique of the building. Only a few original buildings of the vast complex remain and are soon to be reconstructed into apartments, completing the residential development already constructed on the grounds, which includes a shopping centre.

House Mouldings Create A Great Finishing Touch

The Finishing Touch range of house mouldings have been named appropriately, as the lightweight mouldings beautify and adorn houses and buildings, adding a superb finishing touch.  Recently Finishing Touch decorative mouldings have been commissioned for a house being built in a post modern design located  in Hall St, McKinnon.  The exterior mouldings for this build include:

  • Eave moulds
  • Window architraves
  • Window sill mouldings
  • Stringer mouldings

The sixty square, double storey building has slightly more floor space in the downstairs area than upstairs. The project is currently in progress and will be completed shortly.

Another double storey home, moderately sized at forty five squares, will be further enhanced with a number of decorative mouldings. The house in Kiewa St, Ashwood will be highly decorative, with mouldings for:

  • Parapets
  • Stringers
  • Window Architraves
  • Picture frame windows on all four sides

The quoinings for this home will have a half cap at the top.  This is achieved with a square column that has a column capital atop, this look is known as a capital dressing.

A project currently under development in Mizpah-Settlement Rd, Buln Buln East (near Warrigal) is a smaller home, thirty to thirty five squares.  The home will be greatly enhanced with the addition of Finishing Touch house mouldings for-

  • Arches
  • Quoinings
  • Window Architraves
  • Window Sills

A home in Francesca St, Mont Albert North that was previously under development is now  proceeding.  Decorative mouldings for the first level of the house will be completed in three weeks’ time with all mouldings manufactured and installed, creating a stunning finish to this home, within two months.

French Provincial Architectural Mouldings For New Homes Plus Lightweight Mouldings For Older Building

The Eyrie

The Finishing Touch have been commissioned to replace old faulty exterior mouldings with new lightweight mouldings on a fifteen year old building in Elwood.  Situated in Ormond Esplanade the building has a sandstone finish and faces Port Phillip Bay where it is subject to the weathering influences of sun, salt water, wind and rain.  The replacement architectural mouldings of large parapets around the building the Finishing Touch will supply will have a smoother, sharper render style and finish, vastly improving the look of the building and giving the parapets a much longer life.

Requests for quotes on properties in New Gisborne and Ascot Vale are now in the pipe line.  The property in New Gisborne is for a forty square, two storey modern design building after the French Provincial style. The project would involve working directly with the Builders, supplying parapets, window sills, window architraves and arches.  Once the quote is accepted, manufacturing will begin in one month and the house mouldings will be fitted within two months.

The Ascot Vale property is in Ormond Road and is for a new, modern designed house being built in the French Provincial style.  This project will use a large range of decorative architectural mouldings, including parapets, stringers, window architraves, window sills, keystones, pier caps and quoinings. Once the quote is accepted it is estimated it will take three months before the mouldings will be fitted.

All architectural mouldings are taken to the site and installed by certified installers, which carries a 7 year warranty on all installation and fixing. The company’s proprietary render patch system is utilised, virtually eliminating any sign of joins.
